Dwarf hamster doesn’t bite or climb?

Hello community, I've had a Djungarian hamster in my room for a few weeks now. He sleeps a lot but is also active during the day and always comes out around the time I get home. He usually runs around on his wheel for a bit, and we go to bed together at the same time.

He's not hand-tame (yet), but he's not afraid of people or my hand, so he can eat without being bothered, even if he sees a hand doing something a few centimeters away. He often accepts cucumbers and the like with open arms.

He doesn't want to come onto my hand voluntarily, though, and of course I don't force him to. When my two tried to put my hand flat with the food in the cage, he always stood on his back, held on to my thumb, and nibbled on my finger. He nibbled a piece of skin on the tip of my finger, and a very small amount of blood came out. And he didn't climb up to the level above him even once, even though it would be very easy for him given the conditions. Is this specifically because of the species, that they climb less? And why does he bite? Does he feel threatened?

Meating is a sign of anxiety or pain.

Don’t be silly. But if your hamster has bitten so that it bleeds, it is no longer a normal crumb. Or did you let him go?

Knabbern is trying. The hamster looks what you are, whether the hand is edible and especially when you touched food before it, the hand smells delicious.

Wash your hands with odour-neutral soap and then rub your hands in your litter before she lays it down.

Hamsters are generally floor dwellers and cannot climb properly because they have no thumbs and are height-blind. Fall heights above 10cm are therefore dangerous, depending on how the hamster falls. Is the floor higher than 10cm? Then change. Perhaps the “rise” is too steep for the hamster? What is it for a plane? So what is she there for? In fact, planes are not necessary, in addition to supporting sand bath and/or impeller.

Where did you get the hamster? I’m pretty sure it’s a hybrid and not a dsungare, then you have to pay great attention to the food (good food is only available online at feed crows, feed paradise or getzoo).

Then the hamster would rather try what you are.

Your hamster is a hybrid. Only with registered breeders you get artenreine Dsungaren. Zoo shops unfortunately only have hybrids of propagators/mass breeding. Please never buy an animal again in such a place that you automatically support animal cruelty.

You don’t get properly informed. For good information on hamster maintenance: Diebrain.de or Hamsterbacken.com or hamsterinfo.ch

Hamsters can and should not climb as they are height-blind, so they do not know how far they are. At dwarf stars, 10cm of free fall is already deadly.
