Too stingy to spend a few euros on data protection?
I'm currently using Threema/Signal to get away from WhatsApp, as I still feel the data protection is too insecure despite email-to-email encryption. Unfortunately, only five of my friends use Signal, one of them uses Threema. The rest—and that's a lot—still use WhatsApp. While Signal is free, Threema currently charges a one-time fee of €3.99. Many of my friends see this as a barrier to even trying the app—in general, most people's willingness to spend a little money to enable more privacy-compliant interactions seems very low to me. The same applies to email providers: I'd rather spend €1 a month to ensure my email content isn't shared with third parties for advertising purposes; for others, that's unimaginable.
Why is that? I'm not forcing anyone to use these apps or emails. But do most people care so much about their data?
This is the force of the mass and the Henne Egg problem. Whatsapp was the first messenger of this kind. Everybody loved it. The concerns that some have today did not have in the early days of Whatsapp. Firstly, it was not so far (end-to-end encryption), and secondly, Whatsapp was not part of Facebook or Meta.
Now they’re all trapped. Only a few have the desire to test alternatives. In addition, and I mean with Henne-Ei-Poblem, you’re pretty alone there. So you try out alternatives, but you stay stuck with Whatsapp – because the crowd is there and you don’t want to have self-conversations.
I had actually convinced some people about signal, but it didn’t last long. If messages are delivered with 30 or even more minutes delay, a messenger is unfit. That happened to us several times, cause unknown. That’s it with the trip. I’ve still installed signal, but it’s unused.
Many people don’t care about privacy. I personally find it very important to know in what hands are my data and how they are processed. For example, I use Threema. Others simply don’t care or don’t know that messengers like WhatsApp or Facebook generally process personal data
On the one hand, and on the other hand, most people are not aware of what happens to their data at all or what consequences this can have.
I guess because there’s little clarification in this area. Data is the oil of today.
The data protection on WhatsApp is really enough for me. I find data protection is already overrated in Germany.
Why do you see that?
Data protection regulations are European regulations …
So I don’t care what it is.
So I don’t care. What’s going to happen? That the hundreds of cat videos I send out on the net? I don’t think so. And uninteresting for others too.
In other words, do you think it’s good if everyone can get all your conversations?
So I wouldn’t have anything to hide. Quite unrealistic the WhatsApp process will be done. By MILLIARDEN users.
No, I don’t.
I just don’t see that tight. I don’t know what should happen in the worst case, what could ruin my life.
I also see Leaks for unlikely, but not impossible.
Are you separating important things (e.g. exchange of the IBAN or the Netflix account) from unimportant (deine cat videos) at Whatsapp?
Huhu,
yes, so many people don’t care about the data, I’m similar. Find e.g. personalized advertising class.
About Anna
Really? Why?
is simply more interesting and more relevant to me as a result less annoying, as a woman does not need Alpecin
Thank you for your view;)
Yeah.
And there is also a stronger “costlessness”. See how many people here are looking for apps or software for the PC, which Profilevel has nothing to cost.
I mean to spend just about 4€ for a more privacy-friendly experience, don’t hurt anyone. You already drink this in the pub with only one drink – and the experience doesn’t last forever.
But just to communicate with you, it’s not worth any of your acquaintances.
But must be FREE!!11ael!! WhatsApp is AUCH free!!!11!!
Because each of the WhatsApp uses this already happened 🤷 ♂️
So you don’t think you can lose more than anyway?
What do you think can be lost?
No, it’s because your others aren’t pushing like you. For whom should my data be interesting? I don’t have to hide anything, please read everything. I don’t care.
This reminds me of the statement: “I am not going to vote because my one voice doesn’t make any difference anyway.”
