Timing belt and water pump are they related?
Hello, my question is: last week I had my Fiat Punto with 170,000 km on the clock and had it serviced and inspected.
The mechanic always called me for major repairs—in this case, the timing belt. He said my timing belt should be replaced with so many miles on it, otherwise the engine would eventually fail! Otherwise, he said everything was fine.
When I picked up my car, I was told that I now also had a new water pump. They showed me the old one, and it was also quite rusty and didn't look good.
I trust my car people, it's not like that, but replacing/replacing a water pump (I don't have the invoice yet) is surely extremely expensive…
So he didn't call me to ask if the water pump should be replaced.
My question now is, if you get a new timing belt, should you also replace an old water pump that no longer looks good?
Are the timing belt and water pump somehow connected?
Thanks in advance for your opinions
The water pump is often driven by the toothed belt and, in the case of toothed belt replacements, is always changed (partly so prescribed by the manufacturer), the corresponding spare parts kits usually already have the water pump.
The water pump itself usually costs only 30-50€.
The pump itself will not be so expensive but the work would be and since everything is already disassembled, it is best for the customer and frees trouble.
And as it says above, it is also part of the manufacturer’s rule to trade.
In case of a decent toothed belt change, the water pump should actually be changed with that which is normal as the tensioning rollers actually you need nothing to fear, I would be glad if it was done so and otherwise nothing else was found and if everything is on the bill what was changed (water pump also)
You’re always both together. Water pump is favorable. If it’s not changed, you have to worry.
The water pump is regularly exchanged for toothed belt replacement, the WaPu is not expensive and is used depending on the model for tensioning the toothed belt, no exchange takes place which does not last long.
