A fusion bomb (aka hydrogen bomb) always requires a fusion bomb (nuclear fission of uranium/plutonium) as a “starting aid”.

According to the designers, the usual structure is referred to as a plate Ulam design and is described here, for example:

Essentially, a normal atomic bomb is ignited and this compresses hydrogen until it just merges and thus increases the energy of the bomb.
