What does the 737-8 stand for in Boeing 737-8?

Hello dear community,

I'll be giving a talk this year about the profession of commercial pilot. So I'm wondering what the numbers behind the Boeing symbol mean and why they're always so different. For example, Boeing 777-200 or Airbus A380. What does the 777-200 stand for in Boeing and the 380 for Airbus?

Thanks!

Hello,

the line number behind the model gives Boeing simply the version number and says something about the design of the aircraft and its cockpit and/or cabin equipment desired by the customer.

The last two characters are the customer number, such as the 30 for Lufthansa or the 6J for airberlin. This customer number is awarded once and is valid as long as the company exists. That would be more correct. the designations B737-330 for LH or B737-86J for airberlin.

There is something different with Airbus: here the first digit after the dash indicates the version of the aircraft, the second encodes the engine manufacturer, e.g. 1 for CFM, 2 for Pratt&Whitney, 3 for IAF and the third names the performance class, which depends on the maximum starting weight.

This is to be found either at the Federal Aviation Office or at EASA in its A-064 certificate.

is as with autos, e.g., peugeot 308, 408, 508 etc… so it is with boeing with 737, 747, 767 etc… and behind it the number is then again the respective version of the model. So the 747-800 would be as far as I know the latest version of the 747.

and airbus has just A320, A380 etc…

DIe MOdell denomination plus version number behind the hyphen. The 3-digit mOdell number written out can also give conclusions about the airline.

So. The number before the dash is the aircraft type. The number behind it is the version number. If you see something like 738 means the 737-800

This is the version

777 is the type and 300 is the version, as it also gives 777-312…

The first number is the model number. In Boeing, the first jet was 707 and all the following model designations were derived. The project of a ‘concorde-like’ aircraft should bear the name Boeing 2707.

The 7xx was chosen because internally the 100 and 200 for propeller-driven aircraft (B-17 was called, for example, 299), 300 and 400 for military models (example B-52 was called internally 464), 500 for engines and 600 for missiles were reserved.

The military names B-xx etc. are a story for themselves.

The second number is the version designation e.g. the 747-400 was e.g. an upper deck extended Boeing 747
