Google says:

The Aldi Süd/Ost Equator runs across Germany and separates the branches of Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd. It begins in the west at the Lower Rhine, then runs over the Ruhrpott to the east and ends north of Fulda.

In detail, the border runs as follows:

  • In the West:
  • Niederrhein: From the Dutch border near Kleve to the Rhine-Herne Canal near Duisburg.
  • Ruhr area: From Duisburg to Dortmund.
  • East:
  • Nordrhein-Westfalen: From Dortmund to Siegen.
  • Hesse: From Siegen to Fulda.

There are two exceptions to this rule:

  • The cities of Gummersbach and Siegen in North Rhine-Westphalia are both located exactly on the border between Aldi North and Aldi South. In both cities there are branches of both discounters.
  • The town of Ellwangen in Baden-Württemberg is located north of the Aldi-Süd-Grenze. This is due to the fact that Ellwangen was part of the GDR before the German reunification.
