Will artificial intelligence significantly change our society?

AIs like ChatGPT, Midjourney, and others have been all the rage for several months. However, their potential consequences are controversial: While some predict the impending doom of humanity, others see them as merely a new, temporary fad.

What do you think? And have you tried the programs yourself?

I'm curious 🙂 !

In certain areas, I'm really worried. When people think of AI, they often think of the Borg, the Terminator, or Hal9000.

Personally, as a rather positive person, I prefer to think of number Jonny 5 or Herbie.

Nevertheless, I see certain dangers in the application of AI. We're talking about artificial intelligence here, not artificial consciousness, as described in the examples above!

I'm thinking, for example, of the film Red Alert from the 1990s, where the central computer of a fully automated hospital let people die for economic reasons or in some cases actively killed them, for example by administering the wrong medication or using a really scary-looking, fully automatic defibrillator.

I'd say it won't go that far. But it will probably end up with the situation where, for example, triage occurs or medications become scarce, health insurance companies and hospitals will simply leave the decision to the computer… "Machine says no."

This is already happening in some cases. I'm thinking of algorithms for lending, for example.

By the way, I actually see the problem as being much more that incomplete data leads to incorrect results when entered, rather than a decision being made "heartlessly."

Let's take triage again. There's a very fine line between patients with a red status (urgently requiring treatment) and a black status (treatment pointless). Entering data, etc., would simply take too long to take everything into account.

Therefore, I see AI as a very good tool. But it should be used with caution!

Greetings, Anna

Thanks for the insightful perspective! AI should be like a calculator, just a tool. I make the decision and simply turn it off.

It already has. AI isn't just ChatGPT; AI is also what makes things like 'autocorrect' and Google's search suggestions. AI has been part of our everyday lives for over a decade now and is indispensable.

That's why I have my doubts that much more will change. The theory that we're very close to the technological singularity would explain a whole bunch of things, and at the same time, it would mean that AIs can't do much more than what the best ones can currently do.

Das wird alles noch Jahrzehnte dauern, bis man wirklich von Intelligenz reden kann.
