Wieso verlangt das Modalverb…?

as full verb: likes, has liked

Today “possible” is mainly used as full verb1.

• I like you. = I find you sympathetic. You’re coming.
• I like the color turquoise. = I find turquoise beautiful. / Turquoise I like.
• I like pizza. = I like to eat pizza. / Pizza tastes me.
• I like milk. = I like to drink milk. / Milk tastes me.

want to be full: wanted, wanted,

“Möchten” (grammatic: conjunctive 2 of “possible”) as a full verb means a.) “will want” as a wish/please, b.) “go/run/etc. want” as a wish/plan/please.

• I want a pizza. = I want/will have a pizza/shop/eat.
• I want a glass of beer. = I want/will have a glass of beer/trinken.
• I want to go to bed. = I want to go to bed.
• I want to go to Cologne. = I want to go/travel/flying to Cologne.
• I want to go to Mt. Everest. = I want to go to the Mt. Everest.

as Modalverb: want/wollte + Infinitiv, has + Infinitiv + want

Please note the difference in conjugation in perfection to “do as a full verb”! This also applies to the other modal verbs in certain contexts that are so clear that one can dispense with the relevant verb.

• I want to go to the movies. = I want to go to the cinema.
• I wanted to go to the movies. = I wanted to go to the cinema.
• I went to the movies want to go. = I went to the cinema Of wool.
• I have a beer want to drink. = I have a beer Of wool.
• I got to Berlin need to drive. = I got to Berlin Mustard.
• The child is in bed to go. = The child has in bed Sold.
• Peter has not got into the disco to be allowed. = Peter has not entered the disco gedur.
• As a child I have good English to speak. = As a child I have good English Of a thickness not exceeding 10 mm.

1 It would lead too far and would probably also be confusing if I were “possible” in all its functions as a modal verb. And then we’d come to subjective meaning of modal verbs, and this is a very extensive grammatical chapter.
