Why can't I, as an EU citizen, travel to Germany without an ID card?

So I lost my Polish ID and there are border controls going on, whatever.

The police kicked me off the bus and gave me a ticket because I didn't have an ID (I lost my wallet and will get a new one in 30 days)

I have to go to work in Germany, if you want to know why there, I was born and grew up in Germany, I just live in Poland at the moment.

The policeman was also quite cheeky, I would have liked to knock him down but that doesn't help-

I will definitely get a German license, I didn't think it would make much of a difference these days,

But there are border controls again, which is also stupid since Poland is part of the Schengen area.

I wonder why there are controls? Illegal migrants or something?

Every citizen of the Federal Republic has to: Years of life have an official proof of identity. In Germany, the identity card and the passport fulfil this function. In the event of a border crossing, each person must also have a proof of identity, regardless of their age.

Having no proof of identity is an offence. Penalties of up to 5 000 euros are possible – at least theoretically. The municipalities determine the amount of the fine. In the case of expired IDs, the authorities usually only impose fines between EUR 20 and 50.

A PERSO is unknown in Ireland.

Because you still have to legitimize yourself. Can you otherwise belong to any nationality and want to enter illegally?

Yes, with an identity that you’ve just thought out on the spot. You don’t think around the corner.

You can’t prove why they should believe you. We already have enough problems with illegal immigrants.

Then renew your ID in Poland and if you have it, you can go anywhere.

I think you can re-enter with a loss display and a substitute document that can confirm your identity. You’ll get it from the authority that issued your ID. You could also be at a police station in the country where you are right now or at a foreign agency of your country and ask what can be done.

In D there is a travel pass quick procedure where you get an official passport within 72 hours. However, you have to be able to prove who you are. You can’t do that because you’re not in D or German citizens.

Good luck and it’s fast.

The answer is quite simple: because you are also in the EU and in the Schengen area a smooth border crossing paper for legal border crossing. You didn’t have one.

ID card, passport, both in a pre-standard form or a corresponding replacement paper.

Everyone needs an ID. Especially when you are “created” by the police
