In principle, the model with the motor is not bad. With such an old car, however, the maintenance condition is decisive.

My brother has just this model and has been satisfied so far, but after 275,000 kilometers it is clear that it is no longer in duration. Large repairs there were few, I can remember the cooler and typical wear. It is a first registration from July 1998, a later preface lift.

Which A4 (Facelift or Vorfacelift) you take does not matter from today’s perspective, it should only be a well-kept specimen with few owners and comprehensible maintenance. The B5 was actually mature and if you can live with the often very kargen functional equipment (curbing windows, etc.) previous models, a solid, regularly maintained Audi A4 from 1994 is not a bad solution. I would be increasingly looking for a “Rentnerauto” to be issued for example for reasons of age or for driving licences or death – there is always the A4, like the Audi 80, which he cancelled in the summer of 1994, which has a mostly conservative and ancient clientele in the positive sense: the vehicles that are permanently cared for, which still receive every inspection after 20 years and also new parts, if necessary, are not worthy of origin.

Typical deficiencies: water pump and toothed belts (both swap every four years), cooling system, brake hoses, suspensions and especially front axles, including here and there something due to age – but the A4 B5 is one of the most stable cars in the class and time. You should keep away from automatic transmissions, which are not necessarily recommended. Rost is more likely to be seen in models from 1998/99, but you should be careful: After almost 25 years, the galvanization has also arrived at the edge of its possibilities. In other words —-> the old Audi A4 (built until 2001) is now as old as it is allowed to rust.

In summary, I have to say that we have no reason to complain about the Audi A4 of the B5 series (built in 1998) with 1.6 liter machine and 100 hp. He has proved to be loyal services for many years and if he is “going” now, he was really rewarded and was a car you like to remember.

How reliable Audi A4 B5 1.6?

The engine is one of the more durable units that could be bought in the VAG (VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda). And the B5 is still fully galvanized, which is a good condition for a long vehicle life.
