How do I change my router myself?

Good bye!

I'd really like to change my home network router and I'm a bit inexperienced. Do I need my network provider to set up the router, or can I configure all the settings myself via the web interface?
Am I even allowed to buy a router myself or only the routers that my internet provider also sells?
Does my provider have to unlock the router's MAC address?

I am very grateful for your answers!

Since 2016, “Routerfrei” has been valid and allows everyone to use their own router.

Whether you need to help your network operator, or whether it is sufficient access data that you have received with your contract, depends on your network operator and cannot be answered at the same time.

Such things should be written directly into the question.

I don’t know the Austrian legal situation.

Yes to use your own router is allowed.
There is a long way of free routers, which however gives a pre- and a disadvantage.
The advantage, it’s DEIN router and you can do what you want and you don’t have to pay rent anymore.
The disadvantage, the internet provider NOT help you with the setup of DEINES routers.
The disadvantage of a possible disturbance is exactly as great.
If the provider that the line is ok, you know that the error exists to your router, and since it is DEIN router, the troubleshoot is to be left to you and are also on your own.

To install/register certain data, you will receive certain access data from your provider. You need to enter this in your router SELBST.
The Internet provider will not help you.
Why also, as this is a foreign device.

But whether you hire a good router or buy yourself a good router, the same remains at the end.

In Germany there are free router choice,

in Austria partly Routerzwang. Here explains:

https://www.lteforum.at/mobilfunktarifen/routerzwang-oesterreich

Basically, it must be suitable To be a router.

It is important Modem, there are several:

  • VDSL modem with Vectoring for DSL connections up to 100 MBit/s (or even Supervectoring for up to 250 MBit/s)
  • Cable modem (DOCSIS 3.1) for Internet via TV cable connection
  • fiber optic modem required only if no external fiber optic modem of the provider is installed, otherwise required via WAN port of the router
  • LTE or better 5G modem for mobile router

Look into your contract, there is the connection technology in it (VDSL, DOCSIS 3.1, LTE/5G, fiber).

Depending on the connection, a login to the Internet provider is required. The MAC address of the new router is often required for cable internet (DOCSIS).

Look at the homepage of the provider, there is an explanation of how/whether/which own routers are/will be used.

Good luck!

There is a free router choice, so you are not limited to the devices that your provider provides.

Whether the device has to be unlocked depends on the provider and cannot be answered in general
