How is import VAT calculated?

I received a package from relatives in Japan today. Since the value of the item was over €45, I had to pay import duties.

Not a problem per se, and I knew I'd have to pay something. But I'm wondering how they calculated €60… Everything in the package is worth about €75, which is easy to figure out with an internet search.

The parcel carrier didn't fool me, so I asked the shipping service again.

I have received packages from outside the EU several times and have never had to pay so much.

Does anyone know exactly how this is put together?

which is collected analogously to VAT, the amount is 19 percent

In addition, there may be duties on certain product groups.

I can’t say what the fees are.

the duty can be paid to the parcel service from you. They don’t do that for free.
