How can I take care of the plant?

Good Sunday,

I've discovered a hobby for myself: gardening. I've already planted tomatoes, strawberries, and so on. Unfortunately, they were all destroyed at the beginning of winter. So I wanted to get a potted fig tree. I've read about how to overwinter it, but it hasn't helped me much. So, I'm asking for help.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

The computer says that if it helps you:

1. Choice of location in winter

Feige trees are hardy to a certain degree (depending on variety), but in the pot the roots are more sensitive as they are not isolated by the earth.

Ideal: wintering in a frost-free, bright place like a winter garden, unheated staircase or a garage with window.

If there is no such place, a protected place can be used outside (e.g. on a house wall), but it is important to isolate the root area well (see below).

Two. Winter protection for the pot

wrap the pot with jute, air cushion film or an insulating layer of straw, felt or coconut mats.

Place the pot on a polystyrene plate or wood so that the cold does not penetrate directly from below.

3. Protection of the plant itself

Tie the branches carefully together to protect them from breaking through snow or frost.

Cover the plant in a fleece or garden fleece that allows air but protects the plant from cold.

4. Watering in winter

Reduce casting drastically as the tree needs less water in winter. Keep the earth slightly moist, but avoid damming as the roots can otherwise rot.

Five. Reduction and care

Cut off only dead or damaged branches in autumn. A stronger cut can take place in spring.

In the spring you can refresh the earth or repot the fig tree into a larger pot.

6. Slowly get used to the sun in spring

When the winter is over, do not put the plant in full sun immediately. Use them slowly over one to two weeks to avoid sunburn on the leaves.

With these steps, your fig tree should survive the winter well and make you enjoy the next season!

Have a lot of success with your new project and if you have any more questions, let me know and write private.

Greeting

Jonni
