Jap, the lower is Venus and the upper is Jupiter.

I noticed tonight. Why are both so bright?

Just now it’s very dark, as soon as New Moon is. So they seem pretty bright. Generally the whole night sky is better observable, so you can see more stars etc.

Above left of Venus – rather bright – is just Jupiter.

Venus is very close and reflects a lot of light. Jupiter is very big. The two are always very bright

if you have a handy with position sensors and compass, then download the astro-app “stellarium mobile” (free).

if she has “eingependelt” and you target the object in question, then she will show you the name and everything to the extent that the display is enough.

that could have been jupiter (above) and venus (above).
