As long as it remains clear, that the universe (or the universes, at crossover stories) the respective authors are and the fanfiction author has no claim to anything related to the original setting (persons, places, time sequences – whatever) I have no problem with FF. If, for example, Harry Potter gives a clone brother to the FF author and if Mrs Rowling likes to write a story in the potterverse where Harry has a cloned brother, then the FF author has no claim to any financial compensation, even if he can prove that it was his idea. The universe belongs first of all to the original creators and all the ideas that others unofficially contribute to the ownership of the original creators.

With his own, self-created figures/places etc within the serial universe, FF-author(in) can naturally do what he/she wants – but everything that somehow has direct reference to the original template is only loaned by him/her.

There were a few very ugly arguments in the United States a few years ago, which even went to court – I think this was related to Fanstories in the Darkover universe of Marion Zimmer-Bradley. Therefore, most authors now have a strict policy that they generally do not read or acknowledge FF in any way.

On the one hand, they are good as a continuation or “resolving errors” in the original (destroying Plottwists, wrong partner choice despite unambiguous hints… on the other hand, many too much of the original abs or shippe characters in which this does not fit at all have not even been made hints.

It depends on whether it fits the charkter. If the person acts quite differently than in the movies or books, I do not read them, but otherwise I read them occasionally. I also read all stories from a lady to wattpad, where I don’t like what person she writes, but I like how she writes (very complicated) and she writes for me no matter what story. So it always depends on…

So it comes to fan fiction, there are also bad, but also very good, e.g. when it comes to alternative ends, or just stories with own characters.
I find some fan fictions really brilliant and then there are also, for example, MMFF, so Mitmach Fanfiktions, where you can decide, for example, or create your own character for the story.
Of course there are also real plums in stories that I find mainly on Wattpad, which is why I prefer Fanfiktion.de and some are really well written, there are really many with talent.
Fan fictions are of course not everyone’s thing and the content is not something for everyone, but I like many fan fictions.
