it is as in most subjects (but somehow especially in chemistry) highly dependent on how your faculty is. If you have got a stupid teacher, who is human and/or professionally weak, chemistry can become a nightmare.
If, on the other hand, you have a capable teacher standing in front, who thinks in contexts, can convey special things without losing sight of the overall overview and building exciting experiments on all appropriate occasions, then chemistry can be really interesting and easy to understand.

I had (in the upper stage) professionally and humanly a total rivet: He performed incorrect tasks, declared badly and contradicted accepted definitions. Once, he was terribly upset because a fellow student wrote a technically conceivable, but unlikely reaction scheme to the table (the amide anion, NH₂^–, before) and then claimed that there was no such particle; After we carefully asked why it is not possible, what was written there, he threw the “Hollemann-Wiberg” on the table and shouted:

“Find the particle in the book! If it’s not in the Hollemann-Wiberg, there’s no particle!”

When I found out at home that this particle is quite present (all already proved by autoprotolysis in ammonia), even the name (amide anion) was determined and the teacher was cautious about it again at the next meeting, he ran red and threatened us with the words:

“Amid anions? Okay, I’ll give you amide anions in Abitur! You get tasks from me with amide anions that you won’t be able to do if you don’t stop it!”

Oh, my God, what was that idiot… And not only professional, but also human. He always had the same three students on the gravel. They almost always had to get to the board (“Doris, get it out…” and were finished when they couldn’t do anything). In four semesters with six hours a week we made a total of two (!!) Attempts were also carried out by a referendarin, who took a few lessons for a short time. So with him an attempt in zig-hour classes.

Funnyly, this was precisely what my own professional goal provoked, because it encouraged me to become a chemistry teacher and be it just to “compare” idiots like the ones.

I don’t want to say, but my chemistry classes were and are full; Students choose our scientific profile because a colleague and I teach in it and my students confirm to me as well as always that they find my chemistry lessons very good and understandable.
Perhaps I actually channeled the grudge against my own chemistry teacher so that I have made a certain balance in the competencies?!

Conclusion: Chemistry lessons depend very much on the teaching staff that gives him. If you obviously got one of the idiots (like me), I’m very sorry for you. Especially because I am witnessing every day of school that it can also be fun for the student…
