Start with a bang, a spectacular scene that lets you get the reader right into your spell. In this scene, you’re completely inconspicuous about your hero, because he has to prove himself in it. If this knall succeeds, the reader is happy to read on.
A pretty good technique would be Foreshadowing. So almost show a scene in which your main character is in a very fragile situation. Then jump into the past and you’ll tell how it happened at that moment.

There are such and such authors, you can try to write intuitively, so just write on it, or make yourself first thoughts about how the plot and course of action should look in your novel. Try both 🙂
