Unterschiedlich. Es gibt drei grosse Prozesse. Abkuehlung, Ablagerung und Umformung.
Bei Abkuehlung erstarrt das irdische Magma in oder auf der Erdkruste. Bei Ablagerung wird erodiertes Material in Sedimantationsbereichen (z.B. Meere, Seen etc.) angesammelt und durch Ueberlagerung bei hoher Hitze und Druck gepresst bis ein hartes Gestein entstanden ist. Umformung bedeutet letztlich, dass bestehende Gesteine aus den beiden genannten Vorgaengen nochmals durch Hitze und Druck bearbeitet wurden, was vor allem bei Gebirgsbildung auftritt.
