The chances and the “what happens” depend very much on why the hard drive is no longer booting.
If this is only an error in the Windows system area, you will be able to use it with the adapter/case like any external hard drive.
If the disk BitLocker has been encrypted, you need the 48-digit recovery key. For accessing the user folders where most data are by default, you probably only have to adjust owner and access rights.
If, however, it is a physical defect of the hard disk, with strange sounds, please stop the attempt immediately and do not tolerate the hard disk, or the file system in an inconsistent/errorous state, you may not have access.
Then it is recommended first to create a complete 1:1 clone to undertake the repair attempts. Or if the data is worth it, you go to a professional.
Yeah, you can.
The disk appears as an external drive in the file manager.
Yes, if the plate is still legible.
However, it may happen that, for example, files from the user directory (the user on the faulty computer!) are not accessible. You’ll probably have to take possession of it first so you can get there.
You can then backup all data stored there
Connect with USB adapter and see what’s going on. You may be asked for an admin password
