It’s called breathing in the belly because the belly rises. It doesn’t really get air in the stomach. When inhaling, the lung expands, the diaphragm is pressed downwards and the intestines make almost burst and press outwards with the belly

The diaphragm is the “motor” for your “Blasebalg” lung. It moves downwards, increases the volume of the lungs, thus creating a vacuum for inhalation and your abdomen blows up through the lungs that can spread in the abdomen. The lifting of the chest in the area of the ribs only brings about 10% of the breathing volume, the rest is generated by the abdominal breathing.

A singer in particular trains the abdominal cavity and compares, for example, the slow exhalation with the escape of air from a hole in a balloon.

The diaphragm only changes the pressure in the chest that lets the lung breathe.
