Why isn't my new monitor recognized?
Hello.
I just ordered a second monitor. Since I don't have an HDMI port on my PC, I had to buy an additional HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable so that this *could* work. However, I can't get a picture on my new screen, and I've already tried every possible solution. My old screen works perfectly. Connecting only the new monitor at a time doesn't work, nor does powering it on and off, or unplugging and replugging the cable. It's important to know: The screen is powered, which means I can, for example, change the signal source and adjust the settings.
Hey,
I'd say it's almost certainly the adapter. Maybe you were just unlucky and they sent you a broken one, or it's an adapter that can only convert the image signal in one direction. In that case, I think it would be best if you choose a different adapter and make sure the signal can be transmitted bidirectionally. Honestly, though, I'm more inclined to think that the adapter is actually broken, because that can happen quite often, especially with cheap Chinese adapters. So, it's best to contact the retailer's customer service and try to get this sorted out 🙂
Good luck with that
Okay, thanks for the tip. By the way, it's an Amazon Basics adapter cable that has quite a few good reviews, so I immediately jumped at the chance. It's quite possible that it's defective.
Does the old, previously working monitor have an HDMI port? This could test whether the adapter works. Since it's new from Amazon Basics, it should, but it's always possible it's defective.
Otherwise, I can think of: Windows Settings -> Screen -> Additional display settings -> Multiple displays -> Extend this display
However, there are also multiple HDMI versions. It would be helpful to know which monitor should be connected to which GPU.
