Why is there so much competition in the field of media design and media designers at the moment?
Hey,
I'm 22 years old, male, and have been applying for jobs as a media designer, image and sound, for two to three years. But I keep getting rejected. I've had a few interviews and have even been invited to a pre-study internship two or three times, where I gave my best.
But after that I kept getting rejections.
And it's really shocking to see how many applicants there usually are. You ask around at the company or read a lot online, and there are about 50 applicants for one apprenticeship. Or at other companies, it's even worse. Usually, there are over 100 applicants for just one or two apprenticeships. :/
Why is this so crazy these days? Why does it seem like everyone suddenly wants to become a media designer?
But other professions are affected by the shortage of staff and are therefore crying out for new employees?!
I would be happy to receive informative answers! 🙂
Here all, from the academy, graduates of higher educational institutions (Kolleg), specialist schools,
Sufficient to the autodictates for work contracts that take a few EUR an hour.
Even large companies have only one or two employees in their communications departments.
The rest of the work is done by freelancers.
In addition, the image generators based on artificial intelligence.
Why hire someone else?
Only additional qualifications help:
Programming
or customer industry knowledge so that the content can also be generated.
At least communicative abilities to prevent companies
someone who predates the content of the media designer,
or first-class German and Orthography.
There have been and there are too many people who want to do something with media.
More than in the economy, so the many people have to knock around the few jobs.
If you’d have chosen “something with technology” and if you were a technician or an engineer, you might choose the job.
I also have to say that my portfolio has been praised again and again! But I still got to cancel… I already want to do the job, but more than half of the applicants are so standard competitors who want to arrive with their Insta accounts and therefore want to become media designers…
It’s a trend job. Everyone who once saw a YouTube video suddenly wants to do something with media. Everyone who once saw influencers wants to do something with media. Each of the nen Instagram account has and since it postes its sunset images wants to do something with media.
Of course, exaggerated or exaggerated. Is there any trends? People are constantly surrounded by (social) media and then think they want to do something like that, so something with media.
Of course, this is annoying for people who work really really want to practice and not just how it’s kind of hip.
Thank you for your answer!
I also have to say that my portfolio has always been praised! But I still got to cancel…
It's been a long time. Whenever someone tells me he wants to be, we'll roll with the eyes. Is almost as reasonable as to plan: to become an influencer or a famous singer.
Remember, large parts of this profession will soon be done by AI. This is highly likely a profession that has not been recognized again in a few years. For many years, there has been an oversupply to applicants and employers who want to pay as little as possible.
Not too late to saddle or look for a 2nd leg.
That’s right with the AI! I would like to get in the 3D Animations/VFX area myself, but the competition is even bigger than the media designer. Although much is replaced or accelerated by the AI, I will try to deal with the AI in order to create an advantage. Faster working or something.
I could get you out of the stand. 12 starters call it just like you plan and formulate. Partially for years.
You’re in the trend with this, and you’re completely over the labour market’s needs.
That’s nice. But you won’t get rich or find good jobs.
As I said, have another plan B, but try it. You never get it out of your head.
Thanks for your nice and long comment! 🙂
I am now 22, but I have taught myself: photography, video editing, 3D animation and VisualFX (VFX) completely. Also have a portfolio with some work inside. They may not be as good, but at least something as nix ;).
I started with 3D at 16 years. So I’ve been active in this field for six years. : I’d feel like I’d take an exam in this area. (I’m leaning far out of the window 🙂 ). But since I want to work in the 3D/VFX area for movies, it’s extremely difficult to get in there. :/
You don’t stand alone with that. My daughter was always the youngest in her vintage. She’s 21 years old and in the middle of her studies. She has many friends who have already stopped several attempts. They are all in a sort of finding phase. All have Abitur or Fachabitur and come from good conditions.
Don’t worry about it and try it without a realistic plan. They dream a lot and plan a lot, but nothing really happens. The lockdown and the coronary season have thrown them back for years. God I am glad that my children knew early what they want and can.
However, I never told them that they can reach and become everything in life. Don’t be a helicopter mother and always say what I think. A praise is a real praise and you have to earn yourself. Those who have landed in the eternal founding phase are often people who have been told how great they are and that they always do everything great, whether it was or not.
Now arrived in the real world of work, they fall out of all the clouds. They can’t handle frustration or criticism because they don’t know. They already fail to lead a telephone call or to write an email without writing errors. My daughter recently explained to a communist, where on the envelope address and sender come. You can submit a poem analysis in 3 languages but do not write an application.
Who plans to exchange with people in advance. With real people! Thoughts must be tested to get substance. Just like you did. It’s not enough to make things happen alone or just read about it.
It may also take 1 or 2 years longer. I don’t mind if a young person gets lost. What did my son call it? “A right to own mistakes.” You learn the most. And as long as you haven’t tried, you’re still hoping and it’s blocking one. Try and find out if it suits you. After that, it’s out of his head and he’s free for new things. As long as you do not know its borders, this remains: “What would have been…”
So try and continue until it fits.
But I would have a question, would it be bad if you still have no training at 23 years?
Well, it doesn’t happen so fast. : But it is at least a beginning!
Well, good luck.
Germany suddenly becomes a nation for immersive media through this course of study overnight and catches up the spooked years how fast? Allow me to have my doubts.
Definitely have a plan B.
Well, here in Germany a little. Because we just donated digitization. There is still no real training job for 3D artists or animation. But there is supposed to be a new training job next year. Media designers for immersive media. This will also include this 3D and VFX. :
And how often is such a chance offered?
I was thinking especially about 3D animations, you deserve pretty well. Especially if you still work in the film industry as a 3D artist or something.
Unfortunately, this is the case in most areas. I’m also looking for a job, in the commercial sector. Mostly 100 applicants, almost impossible at my age, are also desperate. There is a lack of skilled workers only in very few areas, e.g. in nursing or in crafts.
Is it bad if you still have no training at 23 years? :/
No training? Then you should look for an alternative.
If you don’t have training, you should do a training, and just consider what other area you could do.
Freelancer?
This is because you think media = PC/phone, yes I like it. I don’t remember anything else. Obviously, the need is much smaller than the number of interested parties.
Why? because too many people think there’s the only one for them?
therefore also the cancellation .- what have you done in the meantime?
print shops – shift are becoming less and less – by collapsing .
journalists write directly into the printing system – without account .
This is a fashion profession in the field of media, in which the elements technology and design are involved and thus quite interesting.
A bank doctrine is some too dry, no one wants to bake buns anymore, you have to get up too soon, spades, file or beitel no one wants to take in the hand and electronics is mathelastic and many too heavy, so you fall into office jobs (many applicants), which usually lacks the element of design or equal to the media design (still more applicants), where you can work with graphics programs, videos and so
With the enormous dynamics in IT, technology, media, AI, the profession will change in the future and will certainly cost some jobs.
Apart from this, 50- 100 applications for interesting places were nothing special earlier, it is only particularly noticeable today because the contrast with other training areas where employees are being sought has become so great.
Thanks for the answer!
yes, these are so many points that count. I wonder, it’s bad if you don’t have training with 23 years next year, whereas many others have completed training with 20 years already.
The overall package must vote. At the age of 23 you should have more than 20 years as a candidate.
But if you have a training, you automatically have more experience than if you don’t have one.
Well, I’ve been dealing with photography, video editing and 3D animation since I was 16. 3D animation I have taught myself
This is not only the case at the time, but always feels!
Well, when I was doing my education as a media designer (digital and print media) about 25 years ago, I hadn’t done that extreme, but even then, yes!
And “at that time” the profession was still new – 2 years before it was only recognized by the IHK – and rather unknown!
You will always have competition! No matter what training you do!
But in the “media sector” it will be more because everyone wants to do this. It is often forgotten that it is not “soo easy” to imagine.
Means also: a prerequisite – besides interest – are good grades, previous knowledge, experiences with references, etc. < "only" interest in the profession is no longer sufficient (unfortunate)!
Thank you for your answer!
