Why is my corn snake suddenly so active?
Hello, my female corn snake is normally active at night (or during the day if she's hungry), but for the past few weeks, she's been slithering, digging, and climbing around her enclosure, regardless of day or night (with one- to three-hour breaks during the day to warm up or sleep). She's about 4 years old and is given a white mouse to eat three to four times a month ("She won't eat frozen food").
The temperature is 20-30°C, at night around 15°C (depending on the season)
The glass box is 150 cm long, 50 cm deep and 60 cm high (approx. 5 cm thick soil).
It has a tree bark for hiding/sleeping, a branch for climbing, a skull for slithering through and the thermal insulation is also good for climbing.
She has a regular lamp for the light, a UV lamp, and an infrared lamp (until I bought her a new all-in-one lamp). All three are switched on from "civil dawn" to "dusk," and are adjusted weekly to the overall daylight level.
Decorative plants are also available, and she gets fresh water every day; I clean the bowl every two days, just like with my cat.
There are no changes (unless I throw a mouse in there, then the tree bark is removed to prevent possible injuries if the mouse hides there, the snake jumps in and curls up in the tree trunk and possibly even fights with the mouse. After it has been swallowed, the bark is put back in its original position.
Should I maybe have her checked out by a vet?
She's at the window the whole time and it looks like she wants to get out.
Yes, I know, it's always been said that "snakes aren't social animals and just want to be left alone," but modern studies disprove that. They say that snakes do need "friends" and can even form social bonds. Oh well, okay. Every snake owner knows that these animals aren't stupid. Other animals can form social bonds with other creatures, so why not snakes? When visitors approach her, she immediately hisses at them, but not at me. I can do whatever I want, but she would never hiss or bite me!
Thank you in advance for your help and have a nice week! 😄
Spring. Coupling time.
