Why does the temperature rise above 70 degrees during certain games?

In MSI Afterburner I set the temperature limit to 69 degrees, but it still goes up to 73 degrees or more.

My graphics card is an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 970

Why is this? Why doesn't the temperature stay at 69 degrees when playing computer games with certain graphics, such as Final Fantasy XIV, ArcheAge, Aion, etc.?

What are your experiences?

There is no temperature limit.
The afterburner will probably only make sure that it tries GPU not to reach 69°C by tacting you down before, ergo: it becomes slower.
This is not the case, but it can still go a bit over it, depending on the quality and condition of the cooling and which temperature is displayed.

Apart from that, 69°C is much too low, this is almost cool under load. Set 90°C, so you better drive. The GPU also holds over 100°C – but should not have to. In my knowledge, CPUs hit hard after 95°C, I don’t know about GPUs, but it won’t be lower.

So if the GPU of 2015 is then it can be well dusted. For this purpose, the heat-conducting paste is probably also well dried.

Nonetheless, for a GPU, 72 degrees are a completely normal temperature and absolutely safe in terms of operation.

For example, because you can’t just lower load from now on from 100 to 0. This would probably be necessary to stay below 69°C in some situations, but you can no longer use the function reasonably.
Even with throttling of the clock rate and fan feed to 100%, it becomes impossible to reach a temperature below 73°C.

The question is: what kind of meaning should that have?

in the rest: throttle-temp at GPUs is usually at 105°
