Why does the bison have such a pronounced hump?

What is this dorsal ridge called?

What is its function? Does it have something to do with the animal's size and locomotion? Dogs have a bit of that, but mice almost none.

  1. It's called The
  2. I don't really think about the quick. I guess it serves to anchor the neck muscle, possibly also the one for the front legs. The intimidating impression could also play a role in the bison, which has imposing behavior.

Good Morning

I can only guess:

On the one hand, the larger muscle mass is likely to provide benefits to the animal in battles.

On the other hand, it protects the sensitive neck so that enemies and arrows cannot hit the animals from the back of the neck or head.
