Hi.

Calcium is in the second main group. In salt formation, the calcium emits the two external electrons and becomes Ca(2+).

In the case of fluorine, which is in the seventh main group, there is no electron to reach the electron octet. F(-).

So you need F(-) twice for a Ca(2+) so that the salt is calcium fluoride

That’s right. A nitrogen atom takes up three electrons, so two nitrogen atoms take up six electrons. The electrons take up not the molecule, but the two atoms of the molecule take three electrons. Example:

6 Na + N2 → 2 Na3N
