Why do we usually only remember the first letter of a word?

You've probably all experienced this: you're looking for a name or word, but you can't remember it. However, you can often still remember the initial letter, but not the entire word itself. Why is that?

This is due to the functioning of the human brain. For a general understanding of how we store or retrieve information, I recommend dealing with learning methods.
