Why do many islands a few kilometers off Turkey belong to the Greeks, even though Greece is much further away?

So I'm surprised that many of the islands that you can even see on the Turkish mainland belong to the Greeks, even though Greece itself is far away from these islands.

Doesn't that really add up? Geographically, it doesn't make sense.

Above all, there are many islands that you can see from Turkey, but they all belong to Greece. Just take a look at them on Google Maps. You'll quickly realize that these islands actually belong to Turkey.

It's as if Sylt suddenly belongs to the English. It doesn't fit either.

Like the other state borders in Europe, they would not be drawn according to what might look geographically appropriate on the map.

If you are really interested, you can deal with the history of Greece and Turkey once and then you can see what has all played a role.

History must be known. Then we also know that there are still many Greek sources and testimonies in Turkey that come from the past and prove the history and life of the Greeks in the region, which today belongs to the state of Turkey. Many of these come from a time before the Ottomans arrived in this room. The same applies to the Greek islands.

You said that.

That's easy! This was determined in various contracts, for example in the Treaty of Lausanne (1923). Just because it looks more beautiful or looks more geographically logical in any way means nothing.

These islands have heard Greeks when Turks still lived in Mongolia and they will also belong to Greece forever 🇬🇷💙

Will this be a new Russia Ukraine war?

Maybe, but it is more unlikely than it was with Russia – Ukraine.

Two islands could already have Turkey

Right. Dictators who have too much power are unpredictable.

Your argument makes sense

This has more historical reasons than geography, but there are some such cases where one might suspect a different nationality geographically.

eg the Falkland Islands in South America also belong to Great Britain. Or Königsberg or Kaliningrad, as it is in Russian, is also part of Russia, although it does not border the actual Russian territory.

It's like if Sylt suddenly belongs to the English. Don't fit

But the Falkland Islands.

And parts of Polynesia belong to France and not to Australia or something.

And the Kinmen Islands belong to the ROC and not to the PRC.

And Bermuda belongs to the United Kingdom and not to the United States.

And Puerto Rico belongs to the USA and not to the Dominican Republic.

The geographical situation is not as important as history and population.

Hello,

Does it make "geographical sense" that Kaliningrad belongs to Russia?

makes it "geographical" that Greenland belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark?

No? You know, remember?

Best regards, Chris

Until so long ago, the entire Mediterranean coast and half of Istanbul was inhabited by Greeks. It is therefore rather surprising that these areas are now inhabited by Turks.

The small Asian Greeks were brutally driven by the Turks.

Just like Turks were expelled from Greece. Thessaloniki, for example, had a majority of Turkish population in Ataturk birthtime. But the double mortality of Europeans is known.

Do you know how many genocide and massacres were committed under Atatürk?

Yes, and why are you distracting from the subject?

The whole small Asian west coast was from 1000 BC to about 1400 AD Greek. There were some of the most important Greek cities like Miletus, Ephesus, Halicarnassus, Colophon, Magnesia, Phokaia and many others.

Only when the Ottomans came from the east and destroyed the Byzantine Empire, the west coast was ruled Turkish, with the population still in the 19th century. century was mostly Greek. Only after the First World War did the Turks expel the Greeks from the west coast.

The islands remained in Greek hands.

So it would be better to ask: why did Turks come from Inner Asia and took away the Western Asia Minor from the Greeks?

In short, the Greeks were represented in the region before the Ottomans (later Turkey).

🙂 Fun. 🙂

After this "argumentation" country always belongs to the state that can see it better! Made my day!

geographically, it doesn't make sense.

This is like the island of Corfu in front of the Albanian Coast lies.

However, it still belongs to Greece because the history there is a greater part Greek is. But also because there are no Albanians. Why to Greece heard. The same is with the islands in front of Coast of Turkey.
