Why do chips have so many calories?

On average, chips have 450-500 calories per 100g. How come? Potatoes, after all, have less than 100 calories per 100g. I can't imagine that oil and seasoning add up that many calories.

Hello trude453, 👋

On average, chips have 450-500 calories per 100g. How’s that coming? Potatoes finally have less than 100 calories per 100g.

dried/fried potatoes have more KH,

as fresh potatoes, so more than 100 kcal.

I can’t imagine that oil and smell so many calories.

1 g oil/fat = 9 kcal

1 g KH = 4 kcal

Fritted potatoes hardly have water

and therefore the many carbs have.

Then the kcal from the fat.

100 g chips:

…150 kcal from the KH

+ 350 kcal from oil

= 500 kcal

They are flogged so in oil that they are made of fat at the end.

The whole water is pulled out of the potatoes and this makes a lot, as it finally consists of about 77% of water.

In addition, they are fried in fat, which is known to have 9kcal/g.

Because they’re dry. Potatoes therefore have only 100 kcal per 100 g, because they consist of three quarters of water which has no calories.

Think 400 g of potatoes with 400 kcal. Now remove the water. The result is 100 g crisp potato chips, which still have the same 400 kcal.

The rest comes from the frying fat.

Because it’s not just kartoffels

100ml sunflower oil has almost 900kcal.

100g potatoes have 70kcal, but consist of about 80% of water, which chips no longer have.

And now you can count on yourself.
