Why can't I still open Unreal Engine?

Hi! I'm very interested in video game development and wanted to use my forced vacation, among other things, to learn the Unreal Engine so I can make cool games!

I asked my brother if I could use his old gaming PC, which he hardly uses these days, and he said yes.

So I downloaded the Epic Game Launcher and installed the Unreal Engine.

When I tried to open it, the computer told me that my driver had known issues with the program and that I should install a new driver. No sooner said than done, but the driver suggested by the computer wasn't compatible with the PC's graphics card.

So I looked for drivers suitable for this graphics card and installed them. But I still can't open Unreal Engine. I googled the error message, and Google told me to reinstall the launcher. I did that, but I still get the same error message saying my driver can't do it.

I've been trying to get the program to work for 4 days now and I'm starting to worry that my brother's gaming PC is just too old (over 10 years old)…but we can't afford a new one!

Does anyone else have any ideas I can try?

So I looked for drivers suitable for this graphics card and installed them.

You can find this information from the card manufacturer for the specific card model (which is not Intel, not AMD, and not NVidia). If the card manufacturer recommends the reference driver (from AMD/Intel/NVidia), you can use that. Otherwise, use the driver provided by the card manufacturer.

It is of course possible that the engine no longer supports old components despite having the latest drivers.

More could be said if you had named the hardware…..

The hardware requirements for Unreal Engine 5 can vary greatly depending on the complexity of your project and the features you want. While Epic Games provides official recommendations, actual performance depends on many factors.

Minimum requirements (for smaller projects):

  • Operating system: Windows 10 64-bit
  • Processor: Quad-Core Intel or AMD 2.5 GHz or better
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics card: DirectX 11 or 12 compatible
  • Storage: At least 25 GB SSD

Recommended requirements (for large projects and high quality):

  • Operating system: Windows 10 64-bit (version 20H2 or newer)
  • Processor: 6-core processor (e.g. Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7)
  • Memory: 32 GB RAM or more
  • Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT
  • Storage: 256 GB SSD (system), 2 TB SSD (data)

Additional considerations:

  • RAM: More RAM is always better, especially if you use a lot of assets or large scenes.
  • Graphics card: A powerful graphics card is crucial for realistic graphics and high frame rates.
  • Storage: A fast SSD significantly speeds up loading times.
  • Processor: A fast processor is important for complex calculations and simulations.
