Why are mostly older aircraft used?
And not new or more modern/safe technology purchased every few years?

Hello everyone, I'm currently at the airport waiting for my flight. At security, they searched my bag and simply returned everything in a pile. Everyone else returned their bags neatly, some even packed everything back in the bag, but the person who served me returned everything in a pile. Are there rules about how to…
…Better than being (intimately) searched everywhere. And the recordings will (hopefully) be deleted, right?
There have already been 6 near-collisions in the USA alone between January 1, 2023, and May. Yesterday, an A350 in Japan burned down completely while approaching Tokyo in a collision with a Dash-8. The day before yesterday, two planes collided at the airport in Chicago. There have been so many collisions or near-collisions that I…
Yes, as I said, please share your experiences. I'm 18 now and want to go on vacation with my girls this summer. Mallorca and the like aren't bad, but they're more of a last resort. It shouldn't cost too much, of course.
Hello, I've been driving a 2011 Megane Mk3 Grandtour for two months. Yesterday, I got the "Battery Charging Failure" message for the first time. The battery was probably very low because I use (or used to use) an external multimedia system. Now I'm driving to work, and the car won't start. I definitely want to…
Apart from the fact that new aircraft are quite expensive, there is always the risk of system-related malfunctions.
In addition, pilots must be trained on what is not cheap at their salary. And they must always have a certain amount of flight hours per aircraft type.
In the old planes, on the other hand, you know what you have. The staff can handle, everyone, from the mechanic to the pilot, knows what to do. System-related errors have now been eliminated and if maintenance is made regularly, the safety is also preserved.
The box is turned “on the left” during the regular D-Check. Since the aircraft is “decomposed to the flu”, in principle each assembly can also receive an upgrade.
The only thing that is really old on an old plane is its basic design.
The cost of frequent purchase of new aircraft would be transferred to ticket prices, the level of which would then prevent many passengers from flying (which would not be a bad thing), and consequently the airlines would have to sell the aircraft just purchased to replace them against smaller aircraft in order to meet the reduced number of passengers. Since the aircraft manufacturing industry is not prepared for such a change in purchasing behaviour, it cannot offer comparable modern and safe aircraft to the extent, as a result of which the number of aircraft gap increases – but with less affected passengers per event.
Are you buying a new fridge every year because it has better Wi-Fi?
I’ll give you an example.
Pay attention.
If a plane costs 5000000, 100 passengers almost.
For a flight 12h needs, but everyone costs 50000€ kerosene, each start landing 10000€
A passenger pays 500€.
Crew per day 10000€
The aircraft is serviced 3 times a year for a week, this maintenance costs 100000 euros.
And the airline wants to have 20% profit.
How long does it take to buy a new plane?
Planes are never getting old. Half of all components must be replaced after a number of start-ups, a number of flight hours or simply at a certain age. And about every 10 years, the aircraft is completely disassembled into its individual parts and completely refurbished, so that basically there is a brand new aircraft.
A 20-year-old plane that has just been behind this core renovation is technically better off than a 5-year-old plane. And on the occasion, a new interior is also installed, because the old one has torn out anyway.
As far as safety is concerned, if a design lack of safety is established on an aircraft model, this deficiency is deferred for all copies of this model. Also for aircraft already 25 years old. Accordingly, older aircraft have no more safety deficiencies than new aircraft.
Also, older planes do not need so much more fuel than new ones that you would really save money if you buy a new plane for many millions.
___
And even if an airline wants to order new aircraft: do you realize that Airbus and Boeing are fully loaded? If you order a new plane as an airline, you’ll get it very early delivered in 5-6 years. Do you want to leave your old planes standing in the meantime and bury your customers?
Things fly and work… and are safe!
Why then change? o_O
Besides, aircraft are not quite cheap. The A380-800 from 2018 has cost US$44.6 million! You have to get the money back in the first time!
With your claim, cars, trains and buses should be exchanged every few years. Is then of course a cost story!
You buy You don’t have a new TV, new phone, car, etc. every year.
Because a plane likes to be over 100 million. Euro costs and the pilots need at least some training even when moving from a 737-800 to a 737-MAX8.
Why don’t you buy a new car every couple of years? The stuff costs a lot of money. And with appropriate maintenance, this also lasts a very long time.
Aircraft are expensive, are very well controlled and many parts exchanged as needed, which is why they work very well for a very long time.
To say the counter model to the disposable company! Actually, that’s good!
Do you know how expensive a plane is in the first purchase? No?
An A320neo costs newly estimated €110.6 million. The new planes would probably be twice as expensive…
Planes are not really old. They get new technology that always corresponds to the state of development.
To lease older machines is simply cheaper;)
Where to take and not steal.
