Why are many people afraid of rats?

I'm setting up the home rats are completely okay, Husky rats even find quite clean, even the huge hamster rat looks kind of sweet. I love rats and have had them for over 15 years. I also often see channel rats and other wild rats. I've even seen a young walking rat before.
