Who is digging in the garden?

Hello Community,

I wanted to ask who is digging in our raised bed ⬆️.

We thought it was a vole, but couldn't it be a squirrel?

Because nuts were dug up everywhere (they weren't there before).

Well, in any case: thanks for answering!

Difficult to say

Vole tunnels are usually shallow and are easier to recognize by faults in the ground.

Moles go vertically downwards and are recognizable from the molehill

My guess is either field mice or more likely brown rats.

Ideally, you'd have a nocturnal wildlife camera. Rat activity is usually seen at night.

Yeah, sure. A squirrel might have been digging into their supplies. But they cover everything up again afterwards. Maybe they were disturbed.

Voles also close their holes behind them. I think the hole is too small for a rat. I've also observed Roman snails. They also dig holes like this. However, they also lie in them to lay their eggs.

That could have been a marten. Martens dig anywhere if they smell something edible.

hazel dormouse would be possible.
