Which video player has the best quality?

I have a media center PC with Windows 10 on which I often watch movies. Unfortunately, I've discovered that the picture quality varies dramatically between different video players.

Some examples:

  • VLC is usually too dark and, especially with HDR content, almost unusable on a non-HDR-capable TV. However, the colors are great, beautiful, and vibrant.
  • MPC-HC 2.1 is actually always great in terms of brightness, but unfortunately the colors are totally pale and washed out.
  • And Windows Media Player doesn't play MKV and constantly stutters with large files…

It's frustrating! Isn't there just ONE player that can do everything well? I really don't want to have to try out a whole host of players before every movie to figure out which one looks best…

PS: My TV is a Samsung UE75MU8000. It's theoretically HDR capable, but unfortunately I can't get it to work on my PC (RX580). That would probably solve some problems…

HDR material on a non-HDR-enabled TV almost unusable

Should be logical. You can’t go with a sports car on a forest work path.
