If you have a PI 3B or PI4, I would like to recommend the transfer to USB boot.

Say: Buy You have a fast USB stick (>= USB 3.0), play the operating system and work with it instead of using an SD card. You’ll see: your PI will be a bit faster. If you still want to invest in a USB3.x-SSD, get the optimum out of speed.

At PI4 you don’t have to do anything more than SD card out/USB-STick in/finished.

At PI 3, you have to set something before it can be used by USB boats:

  1. On a (e.g.) Windows PC a USB stick/a USB SSD quite normal, like an SD card, also play with a RaspberryOS image.
  2. Windows PC: Open memory card or work on running RPI
  3. Open /boot/config.txt file with a text editor (on RPI with sudo work)
  4. Insert the following line at the end:
  5. program_usb_boot_mode=1
  6. Use the SD card in the RPI and start the RPI (new)
  7. Log in and check if the USB boot mode is active:
  8. vcgencmd otp_dump | grep 17:
  9. The result should be:
17:3020000a
  • If so, shut down RPI and disconnect power supply.
  • Remove memory card and insert USB stick.
  • Plug in voltage and enjoy booting USB-Stick/SSD.

Theoretically, every MicroSD card works. Of course, recommend the faster, i.e. “Class 10”, e.g. SanDisk Ultra or SanDisk Extreme.

They didn’t even get it. You can buy one of the usual suspects. For example, SanDisk. A quick one is of course recommended. With the raspberry manager there is an operating system loaded.
