Which personal pronoun should be used for the lyrical “I” (poem analysis)?

Which personal pronoun should you use in a poem analysis if it is written in the lyrical first person?

I lost a point on my essay because I wrote "…after the lyrical I saw her lover" and the teacher said I should write "his."

Doesn't it really matter? Or do you skip it altogether and write "…after the lyrical I saw the lover" or something similar?

Since you write “the lyrical mehis Dear partner, because this is gender-neutral and therefore “their” would be wrong.

You don’t know if the lyrical me is male or female. That’s why.
