Which generation M.2 SSD does the Thinkpad P15 Gen1 support?

Hi, I'm considering buying a new M.2 SSD for my P15 Gen 1. It originally came with a 512 GB WD PC SN730 NVMe SSD. Since this is an upgrade, I'm now considering whether an NVMe Gen 4 would work, as they're significantly faster. However, I haven't been able to find an answer to my question online.

Gen 3 definitely works (it's already built in). The official Lenovo pages (Lenovo PSREF, etc.) only mention that they are "PCIe® NVMe®, PCIe 3.0 x4" interfaces, but they add the following: "Notes: The storage capacity supported is based on the test results with current Lenovo storage offerings. The system may support larger storage as the technology develops."

However, I cannot determine whether this excludes support for M.2 Gen4.

If this is the model with the Intel Core i7-10750H, the system only supports PCIE 3.0.

You can also use NVME SSDs that are designed for higher PCIE versions, but you will not be able to reach the theoretically maximum possible data transmission speed, as the lines on the main board are too slow for this.

I’d say no, but you can still use it because the M.2 also has Gen 3. Therefore, you can set up a gene 5 purely theoretically, and then it just doesn’t run with full power.

Yes, yes, but you can reinstall the M.2 when you buy a new laptop. That’s why I don’t think so.
