These are internal core drawings, which are only important for publishers and book trade. The reader does not need to be interested.

How do you know that the number marks the edition? This is usually not recognizable for a customer. These are certainly internal numbers of publishers or Printing.

If I look at my British and American books, which sometimes seem like a number, sometimes not, it is usually the first print, first edited, reprinted … (following annual figures, the latest one is the current edition) or similar. It is different but distinct for a customer, which is the issue. Then there is the ISBN number. The longer number you speak of alone or separately is probably just a key or catalogue number. Sometimes you can also find a CIP number, i.e. a catalog number of the Library of Congress. And maybe the British Library has something like that.

Could you set a picture of the imprint? Perhaps this will help to see it carefully and judge it if necessary.
