When learning Arabic, which variant would you prefer?

Hello, I don't want to and wouldn't learn any new languages due to time constraints, but I am fascinated by the Arabic language.

Leaving aside the Quran as a reason for speaking this language, which variant of Arabic should one prefer to learn?

I have heard that Egyptian Arabic is understandable to most people in the Arab world, especially in the Middle East and North Africa, because Egypt had quite a bit of influence on the Arab world at that time.

Is that true? And if not, what other variation would be worth learning?

I know that one should first learn the Arabic language itself before deciding on a variant, but I'll ask the question anyway.
