When do you use substitution and when do you use exclusion?

I'm writing a math homework tomorrow (11th grade) and the topic is the Pq formula, substitution, and factoring. When will I know which method to use? That won't be possible. With the Pq formula, you always need an x^2 and two numbers, but with the other two?
