Depends on the species of birds. Certain species continue to build on the nest. Even if the youngster is already there. Other types such as wood pigeons lay three branches side by side and are then finished with the nesting.

Again others, like the fence king, build several nests, but then use only one.

Or alpine sailors. They build up to three years on a nest until they use it.

This happens regularly. They are the worst architects of nature.

When the nest is ready. At some point, when they realize that they are not storks, they put in nest building and that fits.🦅🐥

as soon as the nest is large enough and it offers them enough protection and would be for their eggs.
