At my school, the principal has now banned communication about school-related topics via WhatsApp. In other words, we're no longer allowed to discuss school-related matters in our WhatsApp class chat. We can only do so via a Teams channel where our teacher is present. Is this legal?

Well, it depends. He can forbid the teachers to give you the work materials via WhatsApp, but he cannot forbid you without being a teacher in a class chat where you are entertained about school stuff. So say, for example: “What was up in Mathe?”
