Just watch it and you'll notice that the series was very much inspired by real events.
The question is more "Where else can I watch the series in German?" Neither Netflix nor Crunchyroll offers that 😵💫

On Crunchyroll, the license for the German dubbing has expired for only the first season. The remaining seasons are available in German as usual. 🙂 No one really knows how long this will last with the first season.

You have to remember that the AoT world is NOT ours. There was no World War II there, and in the AoT world, there isn't even a Germany or any other country that exists in our world.

Somehow it says something different everywhere… (I think because Attack on Titan has its own calendar, year 845 and so on) but from the clothes and because they mostly get around on horses, I think it was before the First World War.
You have to remember, the people on Paradise Island "stuck behind" because they were fixated on killing the Titans. They didn't have time to develop other things, because taxpayer money was going into 3D gear maneuvers, etc.
