What would you change about the German school system if you only (!) had three (!) options?

Although I was only an average student at best, I had a very good time at school thanks to excellent teachers.

Studying and legal traineeship: horrible.

I was a passionate and enthusiastic teacher for 42 years, until the age of 69. But that doesn't change the fact that the German school system is a disaster for a variety of reasons.

What would you change if you had the opportunity to do up to three things, e.g.

Small classes (in my day, 15 students was the maximum – halving the current size would mean at least doubling the number of teachers!) // thousands more teachers in general // grading // homework // blind reform activism // hopelessly outdated guidelines // overhauling teacher training from pedagogical gibberish to more realistic ones // insane over-bureaucratization // educating students to be free thinkers (instead of the Nuremberg funnel) // dilapidated schools // abolishing antisocial bureaucracy // no more PISA hypocrisy , etc., etc., etc.

Thanks for any answers.

Hello Paulklaus,

You probably already guessed, and one option would be enough for me. I would abolish the system and replace it with something completely different. The other option would be characterized first and foremost by the principle of voluntariness . Immediately after that would be the principles of " joy in learning" and "learning by interest ." Principles 2 and 3 could be interchanged at will.

Greetings Matti

I'm used to that here. I'm basically circling among the pyres, and I came dangerously close to them, especially in the past. I've become a bit more relaxed about this topic since then, but so have those I regularly encounter here who have a different opinion. In other words: The pyres have become less frequent and/or smaller.

Thank you for the ⭐️.

Greetings Matti

  • Centralized definition of the curriculum: I don't think it's a good idea that every federal state is cooking its own soup when it comes to education, and that subjects like biology sometimes cover completely different content. Qualifications must be valid nationwide.
  • More choices for students: I would introduce one subject from each group of subjects (STEM, languages, "talented subjects," and social sciences) as a compulsory examination subject. Whether geography, history, or religion counts toward the final exam should be a choice that Realschule students should also be able to make, not just Abitur graduates.
  • Clean up the material. You don't need to spend two years studying the Middle Ages in history, and tenth-graders don't need to know calculus in math. Instead, you should tighten up the grading; you don't need to drag all the untalented students along.

Whether geography, history or religion counts towards their final exam is something that secondary school students should also be able to choose, not just those with high school diplomas.

Even the high school graduates weren't allowed to choose this when it came to their intermediate school leaving certificate…

And frankly… I think it's quite wrong to declare "talented subjects," as you call them, as mandatory exam subjects. I was so glad I didn't have to take music, sports, and art for my A-levels.

It was the same for me, but it only works in high school.
I think it's ridiculous that such nonsense as sports or religion has to count towards the Realschule (secondary school) diploma. You should be able to opt out of those, too, if you take an additional, different core subject instead.

This can also be applied to biology/chemistry/physics, etc. If, for example, I choose physics as my major, I should be able to skip biology altogether…

I would make the school a little less soft. Rather than a "no one should be left behind, and we'll wait for even the slowest" mentality, where every student is tried to be retained at all costs, instead, there would be a clear, even somewhat strict, "cut," and anyone who simply can't keep up might be better off at a different type of secondary school.

It sounds harsh, but I think it would ease a lot of things. On the one hand, it would increase the value of certain qualifications in the long run (which would then take some of the pressure off parents), and on the other hand, it would also ease the burden on the class and the teacher, who have to get through the material, which is obviously made much more difficult by having to repeat the course ten times without planning.

Overall, I would probably modernize the school's content… but still focus on general education and knowledge transfer. How to set up a standing order or fill out a tax return isn't something that school should teach; you learn that at home. How to cook, wash, clean, and manage your household budget is something you learn anyway.

Not just that all teachers have to be like this one teacher at my school.

He assesses students objectively, is always there for them, explains everything perfectly, shows empathy, organizes everything well, has the best lessons, understands your problems, follows every rule and every law, etc.
