What should you look for when buying an analog camera?

Hey, my best friend of all time and I are going on vacation together on Tuesday and wanted to go to a flea market beforehand to buy an analog camera. What should we look for when buying one? We want it to work and we don't want to get ripped off, so how can we check that?

The sellers often do not know 100% if the camera is still working. But now check for the last pusher function is bad and does not just work on site for analog cameras.

It’s all right by shooting a movie.

The risk of damage can be overlooked in such old cameras for 10-20€. So you have 3 options:

  • to trust the VK and thus photograph it on holiday. In the stupidest case, you are 20-30 Euro (camera+film). So make important photos additionally with the phone.
  • do not buy a camera from the flea market and look around at dealers where the camera was tested before.
  • do not buy a camera and instead photograph it with a retro look app on the phone.

It’s too late for the flea market camera today.

Go into a photo shop tomorrow and buy a used camera, let the seller guarantee that it works. – You don’t even use this if it doesn’t work and the seller fixes it afterwards on “survey” or pays the purchase price back, but you are much safer than on the flea market. There you will hardly find anything where the seller can seriously judge the condition.

fly together on Tuesday to the holiday and wanted to buy an analogue camera beforehand

If you want to do a proper function check, which is recommended, then you buy such a camera 1 month before. Then her time would have had to shoot a film, let film+ images develop and check if the camera and lens are really functional.

We want it to work and we don’t get pulled off, so how could we control it?

There is now something too late for this, especially with regard to the fact that little to no idea of the analog technology exists. So if she doesn’t work, she’ll be there without pictures after her holiday.

Oh, yeah, can you really use an analog camera, like for glare and exposure, do you know the wigs of film transport?

What camera?

Hi8 camcorder?

I would pay attention to things:

  • General condition (he is well-kept or yet too reduced)
  • What does the lens look like?
  • Is the device operational? So battery loaded in it?
  • The tape drive is the vulnerability. Drive broken = total damage. That’s why you’re looking at it: is it clean up and up? Does it make the usual quiet constant whistle when it runs? So get it. There’s nothing wrong with shaking, snoring or shaking.
  • Do all the keys work?
  • Does the zoom work without whackles?
  • Is the power supply still present or easy to obtain? (possibly buy a matching power supply from the power supply plug)
  • Does the camcorder work all over? You can test this with a short sample. The result can be viewed directly on the camcorder by the viewfinder by backshotting the cassette and then going to play mode (therefore: necessarily take a Hi8 cassette!)

Otherwise, stop at the price: From the household redemption box of the variety “I don’t know what I’m selling” for five, I would also risk untested.

But you can also test a camera relatively well, even without a direct result: once “shoot photo” and make sure that the continued transport of the film works smoothly. Then “shoot photo” and look at the front of the lens to see if the locking mechanism works. Then see if the loading hatch, where the film comes in, closes in a light-tight manner and does not appear to be twisted or bent.

Just spend as much money as you can in case of a mistake of loss.

In fact, it is not possible for simple analogue cameras to break down much apart from these critical mechanisms, because the “recording technique” is in the film you will buy NEW in the photo business. :

The idea is not the best. Many analog cameras have problems with times due to their age. My beloved brick (Zeiss Icarex 35) still works, but if the short closure times are still correct, I would like to doubt– And that also applies to other mechanical cameras.

The risk of bringing a lot of unusable picturers home is high.

This is not a good idea to take a camera on holiday, which one has not tried before, to be sure that it also works.
If you don’t know about old cameras, you can’t see if the shutter speeds are correct, the light seals are still dense or if the exposure meter still works correctly.

It makes little sense to put analogue, depending on where the trip goes you will hardly be able to buy film material. My tip, buy a digital camera, or take your phone.

Important: There must also be movies for it… and then you have to watch what movie you use. During the day you can take ISO100 film, in the evening you need easy ISO400. You can’t set this on an analog camera… you just have to use different movies. Besides, you need to see which lens you have and use. You can’t make a panoramic photo with a 35mm film… That’s where the motif doesn’t fit!? o

Panorama also goes analogy, is much more complex and with risks. But a panorama with analog stitching is not impossible. I tried myself in old times.

Buying a camera from eBay and not from the flea market.

I would recommend you the Canon A1 with 50mm 1.8 and 28mm 2.8, you get already from 120 euros and there are plenty of tutorials online.

I think one of the best cameras in terms of price performance.

At classifieds there might be a chance, but completely without knowing about analog technology?
