What kind of capacitor is this?

Good day,

I removed this capacitor from an old tube radio. Underneath the paper cover with the label is more paper; the pages are made of a tar- or wax-like material.

I came across the term "tar capacitor" online, but I couldn't figure out how this type is constructed. Does it really use tar as a dielectric?

I'd like to open it, but I'm worried there might be PCB-containing oil in it. You never know with such old things; one of the transformers in the radio says February 1948.

In case anyone can't read the label, the capacitor is from the Kondur brand, had a capacity of 1uF and a dielectric strength of 500V.

Thanks in advance 🙂

looks like a normal elko and from the time it could fit. but it doesn’t look healthy anymore

The capacitor is 500V- When exchanging either take a similar value or slightly higher. It is called stress resistance. The value 1uF (if any be the same) is above it. He should have been installed somewhere in a power supply. I don’t have to.

No Elko, because no electrolyte…. unpolished paper wrap, tary, + metal foil

… it looks like that for me. Error not excluded….

The radio is only to be repaired by specialist noises. A laie won’t get any more. Unless he has a lot of time. If it were, a collector would be very happy about it. I have enough old radios. So please no offers. Thank you!

That’s nice. It is only very shameful not to bring such a device back to the foreman, but to slaughter it completely pointlessly. 🙁 Then a collector bleeds the heart.

The radio is a very shame. 🙁 Just older devices deserve to be kept alive and running for so long. The tubes can be changed. A tube plan can always be found on the back wall. And the other parts like the UKW Tuner (rotational capacitor) can be found on eBay. A skilled person can bring him back to life.

There is actually (only) tar as an insulator between the metal foils

There is no oil running out

The part comes from the Nazi period from the trunk radio for Göbbel’s propaganda.

Here is the right replacement

Is the voltage vc or dc`?

Yeah, I’m sure you’re building it differently today. The capacity should still be 1uF; is not an Elko.
