It’s an extra sun visor.

Has our golf 4 too.

But only works if the sun is just above the rear view (so quite rare)

What car is that?

Could be a spectacle holder, but could also be the back of sensors under the front panel.

Neither or… this is a small aperture that you fold down when the sun sits between mirror and rooftop. A spectacle case on the roof… sorry… but more unfavorable, you couldn’t do that anymore. And if there were sensors under there, VW wouldn’t do that so that you could open it with a single small handle toollessly – for what?

However, such compartments are not so flattered that you have to fight with the mirror and possibly adjust it.

This is the ceiling of a VW and after 2 x Passat I can assure you: This is a sun visor!
