It is not free, but you inevitably pay about 200€ in the semester fee.

I only know it from Hesse, but if it is the same in NRW, you can use all means of transport of the public transport. IC/ICE are therefore logically excluded

The semester ticket NRW is issued as a supplement to the respective regional semester ticket, the conditions of which were agreed between the respective university and the local transport network. It is paid via the semester fee.

More detailed information about the semester ticket NRW is available here: https://infoportal.mobil.nrw/nrw-tarif/ticketinfos-im-detail.html#c1024

You pay the ticket for all students with the semester fees half yearly. You can use the complete public transport and regional transport with the ticket in your network and NRW.

You can find the rules for taking wheel and accommodation and all other rules on the side of the university or association.

A semester ticket is a ticket which automatically gets every student of a university and which then applies for a semester in public transport (bus and train) in a specific area.

For the semester ticket, a contract was negotiated between representatives of the students and representatives of the transport companies, which also stipulates the price of the ticket. Each student must pay this prize together with the other semester contributions before the beginning of the semester.
