What are you buying? Eating? Can also be found in the onboard restaurant!
Two small sandwiches from the snack stand at the airport, I also find the North Sea fish rolls OK. Bite student food. Bit nuts. Some cookies and/or chocolate, water. That's all you need. What to read.
I find long car rides in Germany boring. Whenever it goes, I drive by train or fly because I work for an airline, this is very cheap for me. And then I'll rent a car on site.
train: smallness to eat, what to drink, what to read, travel-head cushion.
car: also drink, eat, drink (possibly hand-friendly). music, a blanket. I usually drive myself – that's different because I can't relax.

I never drive a train.
Otherwise: bottle of water and one/two to go sandwiches from the supermarket. That's it.
5 hours by car is not that long, the route I/we drive through and only make a small pinkish break. I don't need big food or longer breaks.
In the car: drink, eat, blanket if you're in jam
On the train:
Rechargeable battery pack, 2nd smartphone, eating drink, tickets
What to read and tend to eat
What are you gonna take? As always:
a book, something to drink, depending on the time of day, a bread or cookies or something.
Covered breads, water, and beer
