What do I need to consider when using an external hard drive for FRITZ!NAS?
Until now, all family photos were backed up on an external hard drive, but they've been completely forgotten there. What good are the photos if you can't see them?
That's why I've been thinking about a NAS system so I can access the photos from anywhere. While researching, I came across the NAS feature on my FRITZ!Box 7430 and think it's a good and cost-effective place to start.
But I'm still thinking about which hard drive is suitable.
I know that not every hard drive is suitable for every task, but I don't know what to look for.
What characteristics must the hard drive have to meet the following requirements?
- large enough to store a few thousand images
- must be able to withstand being constantly connected to the Fritz!Box
- must be able to constantly view/add images
- should last a few years
PS: I know the hard drive isn't 100% secure, as it could be struck by lightning, for example, via the Fritz!Box. Therefore, I'll also back up the images to the old external hard drive.
It’s cost-effective.
It is just an external USB storage medium and is not faster at a Fritzbox – even if several people access it at the same time.
Every real NAS is far superior and much faster.
An external hard drive starts at 70 euros, a NAS system at 300.
At most 3 people will watch images at the same time, if at all.
I don’t need a high-speed for a slideshow.
The box only has usb 2? 60MB to 625 MB data transfer restricts usability, also provides usb2 with less energy.
Absolutely you need to ensure the power supply of the plate. Say: Balance what the USB port of your Fritz!Box can deliver and what the planned external panel really needs. And that doesn’t always fit together and then you need an external power supply for the board.
Frankly, FRITZ!NAS is nice and useful for a few small things, but I expect more from a real NAS.
According to FRITZ! I only need to change the USB setting (from Green, USD 2.0 to Power USB 3.0) to connect a normal hard drive.
I only want to centrally store/view/divide pictures. I FRITZ!NAS really inappropriate?
It has no backup function and is slow. Are there any further disadvantages?
Since you didn’t call your Fritz!Box model, I had to stay in general.
There are other requirements and yours can do well. Then everything is good. I can’t judge your requirements and a USB 3 capable Fritz!Box I don’t have to relativeize my personal opinion. I would try your place with a smaller USB stick if the FRITZ!NAS does everything you need and then you can buy a record. But it’s just a proposal.
